History of Bethel Baptist Church

Bethel Baptist Church, located at 1100 Huguenot Springs Road in Midlothian, Virginia, was established in 1817 by a group of 56 members who sought to form a new congregation closer to their homes. Prior to this, they had been meeting at Shortt’s Stage Tavern on Buckingham Pike (now Midlothian Turnpike) every two weeks. Their desire for a more accessible place of worship led to the founding of Bethel Baptist Church on April 23, 1817 Bethel Church Midlothian VA.

In 1882, the church built a brick structure—the first in Chesterfield County—replacing the original building. This brick church was later replaced in 1894 by the current Gothic Revival-style sanctuary, designed by architect W.C. West. The church was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1999 due to its architectural significance and historical importance.

Over the years, Bethel Baptist Church has undergone several expansions. The church property also features a cemetery with approximately 500 burials, including veterans from nearly every American war, from the Revolutionary War through the Vietnam War.

Today, Bethel Baptist Church continues to serve as a vital part of the Midlothian and Powhatan community, upholding its mission to knowing, growing and going in the love of Christ.

Bethel Baptist Cemetery

In 1885, Bethel established a cemetery. It was one of four cemeteries in Chesterfield County at the time and currently contains the graves of veterans from the Revolutionary War through the Vietnam War. A commemorative plaque honoring the cemetery and the soldiers was unveiled at the Church's two hundredth anniversary celebration.
